Boman Irani rejects all stereotypes, whether in characters he plays or in his real life. He is that rare entity in bollywood – an archetypical performer – a star devoid of the trappings of the stardom. So how does he do it? “With my head firmly on my shoulders”, he quips, with characteristic humour. Egged on, he elaborates, “I was a shopkeeper for 12 years, so it has made me grateful about what I receive in life”.
To start a bollywood career after 40 is not easy, but it happened for him. “There are no rules about anything; if you work with passion then nothing is impossible”. From Main Hoon Na to 3 idiots, his has been a remarkable journey. How does he feel achieving so much in such a short time? “You know, in life nothing can be planned, not even babies! (Guffaws) I enjoyed all the characters I played, good or bad”.
So is the Parsi Chokra, who is fluent in four languages open to doing South Indian Cinema? “Oh! Absolutely! Language is never a hurdle, and south Indian Cinema is great – I would love to work here”
And how does Boman Irani unwind? “With photography, which is a passion of mine. I love taking pictures – It’s a great stress buster”.
Finally he talks about his recollections of the days he spent in Hyderabad shooting Well done Abba. “I love this city and its food. Like every Parsi, I’m a foodie, and I really enjoyed the delectable cuisine of Hyderabad. In fact, my friends threatened to block me if I don’t stop ‘tweeting’ about the biryani here!”
